We can thank Walter P. Chrysler for the introduction of the HEMI to the automotive market.
The first ones were 331 cubic inches in displacement, similar to what is pictured here.
If you've never driven a vehicle with a HEMI, I can tell you it feels like nothing else. You feel the torque right away!
HEMI engines led the way in the muscle cars of the 50s!
The picture below shows the passenger side of my 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport, which featured a 354 HEMI that supplied 280 horsepower!

You could really feel the torque in this puppy, even at 50 years and climbing!
I wasn't in this car for five minutes, before I knew I'd be taking it home.
The power steering was like air!
It was a lead sled, for sure, but it was fast, beautiful and it slept two comfortably!
