He personified counterintelligence in America, however it's arguable that he did as much harm as good.

Among his closest friends was Brithish MI spy Kim Philby, who turned out to be a working for the Soviet Union and who eventually fled to Moscow.

By the time of his retirement, his paranoia had crippled his effectiveness and some have even speculated that he was in fact the mole in the CIA who he claimed to be trying to find.

The 2008 book, Our Man in Mexico - Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA, documents how Mexico City CIA station chief Winston Scott was kept in the dark about the agency's full knowledge of Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963, after Scott reported to Washington headquarters about Oswald's visits to the Russian and Cuban consulates in Mexico City. It further documents that the counter-intelligence division of the agency was familiar with Oswald right up to the top man, Angleton, and agency insiders from that time have had no explanation for why Scott would have been kept out of the loop other than the proposition that if counter-inteligence was using Oswald in one of their operations, the information would be shared only on a need to know basis and Scott did not have a need to know.

Angleton was one of several CIA men who stonewalled the Warren Commission.
